The Deshpande House, designed by RM+H Architects, is a contemporary family home in Newasa that celebrates light, air, and honest materiality. The house is organized around a flat terrace and a series of open, connected spaces that allow the indoors and outdoors to merge naturally. Constructed using the rat-trap bond technique, the walls provide insulation while revealing the craftsmanship of exposed brickwork. This method gives the house a warm, textured appearance and helps maintain comfort throughout changing weather conditions.

Since the façade faces west, a double brick screen was designed to filter the intense afternoon sun. This screen creates a soft play of light and shadow while allowing air to circulate through the layers. Inside, double-height volumes enhance the sense of openness, and strategically placed skylights draw daylight deep into the interiors. Through the day, sunlight shifts across walls and floors, creating a calm and ever-changing atmosphere. The spaces feel open yet grounded, offering privacy without losing their connection to the sky.

The landscape around the house uses native species that blend with the region’s natural palette. Verandahs and open courts act as transitions, encouraging outdoor living and passive cooling. Every material in the house, from the exposed brick to the raw concrete and stone, is chosen for its honesty and durability. The design avoids unnecessary finishes, allowing the materials to speak for themselves.

Deshpande House represents RM+H Architects’ approach to architecture that is both sustainable and deeply contextual. It is a home shaped by climate and light, designed with restraint, and rooted in the land it stands on.
